Types of Light Bulbs and Lighting Attributes
There is a never ending choice when it comes to choosing a light fixture. It is the
bulb type however, that will determine the effect of that light on its surroundings.
The bulb type can help create a mood of a room and help you see in a task setting.
The color of the light can also change the appearence of color to something less
than desireable in some situations.
There are three basic types of light for your home
Incandescent
This is the most common type of bulb found in most
homes. It is the cheapest to buy and also the least efficient.
Incandescents tend to cast a slight yellow tone. In a setting
where a warm mood is desired that can be useful but if an
object being illuminated needs true color, this will distort it.
Some types of incandescent bulbs are A-bulbs, Reflector
bulbs, Globe shaped bulbs and Par bulbs
Fluorescent
This type of light is very efficient but some people do
dislike it. Today there are many full spectrum bulbs that
provide ample and pleasing illumination. Some types of
fluorescent bulbs are T-12, T-8, They come in 2 foot, 4
foot and 8 foot lengths. There are also circular fluorescents
and very popular today, compact fluorescents.
Halogen
This type of bulb uses a halogen gas which heats to a very
high temperature and through a chemical reaction deposits
tungsten back on the filament. The bulbs last considerably
longer than incandescent and provide an intense white light
While this is not the only three types of bulbs, they are the most commonly used.
Some other types of light are
LED, which may become a popular choice in the not to
distant future. See our
Lighting Forum for more info. Other types you may see are
bulbs used on the exterior or in commercial applications like Metal Halide or High
Pressure Sodium.
Different light sources can have an effect on the color rendering of objects that they
illuminate. For example in a kitchen with light colored cabinets, incandescents can
make the cabinets appear yellow. This is because the filament glows orange and does
shed yellow, orange and red light. A solution in this case is a halogen bulb. Halogens
provide a nice clean white light and even when dimmed don't change color.
