Kitchen Lighting
There is probably no one room in the house where lighting is more important
than the kitchen. It is also a room where different types of lighting all come into
play.
General lighting to provide a comfortable and well lit area to work and
entertain.
Accent lighting to highlight the great aspects of your kitchen. Task
lighting to provide the lighting needed to perform the many tasks in a modern
kitchen.
Let's examine these different types of lighting and how they can be used in a
kitchen. The first is General lighting for the room. This can be accomplished by
several means. The most commonly used light today in kitchens is the High hats
or Recessed can. Recessed lighting provides very good illuminating qualities
while keeping a clean neat appearance. Recessed lighting also gives you the
ability to have the light where you need it and the option of using several
different types of bulbs. Below are some common kitchen designs with a
recessed lighting layout.

This is just a few basic designs. There are numerous variations making each
kitchen a unique situation. Sometimes a vaulted ceiling with more than one
angle can present a challenge. With a ceiling like that using some type of
eyeball or sloped can is required and possibly a few more lights.

Recessed cans are not the only alternative for general lighting in a kitchen.
Another choice is track lighting. When most people think of track lighting they
think of the old ugly bulky looking things from the 70s and 80s. Track lighting
has come a long way. One type of track that is attractive and fits well with a
modern look is Tech's

Another option is simply using ceiling lights. The one biggest drawback to this is
it becomes difficult to get the light where you need it. Placing ceiling lights
behind you in a kitchen causes your body to cast a shadow on your work area.
Certainly not the best situation for a high task area like a countertop.

Task lighting is an important aspect of any kitchen lighting design. Most often it
is the under cabinet lighting that is referred to as Task lighting which is correct.
It is however, not the only place for task lights. Simply placing a single recessed
light over the sink, on a separate switch qualifies as a task light.

There are many different types of undercabinet lights and manufacturers who
make them. The basic types are individual fixtures, which can be fluorescent,
halogen or xenon, or track type low voltage linear systems, which are halogen
or xenon. In some areas of the country, you may be restricted by local building
codes and be forced to use fluorescent light fixtures. Today's fluorescents are
slimline and provide a good quality light. They are the most economical choice.

If you are going to install a pot rack over your stove top such as over an island,
don't overlook using a lighted potrack. There are several companies that make
them in different designs to suit your design needs. For more about
